Carmel Higgins

Carmel Higgins, LCSW

Carmel is a licensed clinical social worker who holds Master’s degrees in Social Work and in Education. She has extensive experience working with families from preconception through the early parenting years, and has specialized training in trauma informed therapy as well as in perinatal and postpartum mental health. Carmel draws from different theoretical perspectives to help her clients meet their goals and ultimately heal. The theoretical orientations she uses most often include Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and attachment and strengths based therapy.

Carmel has experience working with a wide range of perinatal mental health concerns, and is particularly passionate about working with infertility, pregnancy loss or termination, and birth trauma. Additionally, Carmel enjoys working with parents of young children, providing them with tools, guidance, education and support to better understand their child’s needs, strengthen the parent-child relationship, and decrease stress.

Her style is warm, supportive, and engaging. She brings to her work a genuine curiosity in learning clients’ past and present experiences and the exploration of their concerns. She collaborates with her clients to improve coping skills, reduce anxiety and stress, increase self-confidence, and nurture their ability to access internal strengths and resiliency. She deeply values developing a therapeutic relationship that results in clients feeling seen and understood, assisting them in achieving greater emotional health.

Above all else, she appreciates the courage it takes to open up to someone new and recognizes the privilege it is to get to know and work with her clients.
